Snakes are found in virtually every type of ecosystem in NJ, pine barrens, mountains, grassy, marshy, etc. Snake is an important part of the ecosystem, depending on the size and type of snake; they will eat anything from insects to rats. We have 22 species of snakes in NJ and 2 of them the Northern Copperhead and the Timber Rattlesnake are the only ones that are venomous.
